An American
Tapestry
A participatory arts docu-series where young people don’t just tell America’s stories — they invite the country to take part in them.
More Than a Program
An American Tapestry is a youth-led arts and leadership incubator that brings together young people from distinct regions of the country to transform cultural stories into shared radiance.
Through story, theatre, sound, movement, and shared recipes, students explore who they are, strengthen their voices through collaboration and leadership, and co-create original work that reflects the brilliance of their communities.
But this work doesn’t stop with the youth.
From the beginning, An American Tapestry is designed as an experience — one that invites audiences to step inside the process, not just observe the outcome.

The Docu-Series
An American Tapestry
What happens when young people don’t just tell America’s stories — but invite the country to participate in them?
What it is
An American Tapestry is a participatory docu-series that follows youth ensembles from different regions of the country as they come together to create — and to lead — a national conversation through the arts.
Through story, theatre, sound, movement, and food, young people explore who they are and reflect the brilliance of their communities back to the nation.
As they collaborate across difference, they don’t simply perform for an audience — they design experiences that audiences can enter.
How audiences take part
An American Tapestry is not something to be consumed from a distance.
Audiences are invited into the experience in multiple ways:
• Regional dishes created by chefs from each participating community
• Collaborative fusion recipes developed across regions
• Live performances that include shared food moments
• At-home recipe or spice kits that allow participation from anywhere
From live events to watch parties, from tasting to storytelling, audiences don’t just witness the work — they become part of the weave.

Phase 1
Explore
This phase lays the foundation for the stories and experiences audiences will later be invited into.
Students discover their “Core Spark” through story, movement, and reflection.
-
Build their Radiance Wheel and “Recipe for Me.”
-
Create art, story, and movement inspired by personality frameworks and sensory play.
Develop self-awareness through theatre exercises like Accept the Offer and Sizzle in a Hot Tin Pan.
The Tapestry is Woven through Three Intentional Phases.

Phase 2
Strengthen
As stories and recipes are gathered, the seeds of shared experience begin to take shape.
They gather stories and recipes from their communities, learning how creativity builds strength.
-
Team-building and ensemble creation (Chocolate-Covered Strawberries).
-
Community recipe collection and story gathering.
-
Begin devising theatre work through Tomato to Marinara.
-
Explore Simon Sinek’s concept of “characteristics over weaknesses.”

Four Day Retreat
Where the Tapestry Comes to Life
Rehearsal, Leadership, and Co-Creation
Designed as an immersive leadership and rehearsal retreat, this four-day gathering brings youth ensembles together to deepen collaboration, rehearse original material, and co-create a shared finale.
The retreat balances youth-led decision-making with guidance from professional teaching artists, musicians, and directors — creating a space where leadership is practiced, not taught.
.

The Exchange
The retreat is not the end of the journey — it is the bridge.
Following the Four-Day Retreat, students participate in a reciprocal exchange between regions. Youth travel to their partner community, staying in local homes, learning the rhythms of daily life, engaging in service, and deepening relationships beyond the rehearsal space.
During each exchange, students:
– Live with host families in the partner region
– Explore the local community and cultural landscape
– Participate in community-based service
– Perform their collaborative work at a professional regional theater
After returning home, the exchange is mirrored in reverse, with the partner region traveling to host and perform in turn.
Living Inside One Another’s Communities
Through creation, exchange, and performance, An American Tapestry moves beyond representation — building genuine relationship, shared ownership, and a deeper understanding of place.

Phase 3
Catalyze
Their work becomes a living mirror — activated through performance, shared meals, and moments of participation that invite audiences into the tapestry.
They co-create and perform an original production — blending theatre, sound, and flavor into a living mirror of America’s brilliance.
-
Integrate sound, music, and movement.
-
Host a symbolic potluck reflection: each youth brings a food or ingredient that represents their contribution.
-
Prepare for the joint retreat and performance exchange.
